Built out of a living material, solid wood furniture is susceptible to fluctuations in humidity. Maintaining a constant humidity is the best practice to prevent cracking or warping of the wood. Relative Humidity (RH) levels between 35-55% is ideal for Handstone furniture. Solid wood furniture kept outside of that RH level may result in irreparable damage to the furniture that would not be covered by the warranty. Humidity in a house can be maintained by using air conditioning in the summer months and a humidifier in winter months. You may wish to monitor the RH in the room where solid wood furniture is kept by purchasing a hygrometre (available in any Home Improvement store).
Solid wood furniture should be cleaned with a soft damp cloth and mild diluted soap. Wipe surfaces dry after cleaning.
No solid wood furniture should ever be kept near or above any heat source including radiators, HVAC vent or stove.
Avoid any standing liquid on any solid wood surface as this can damage the finish. Likewise, avoid placing any hot item directly onto a solid wood surface. Using table cloths and/or placemats can help prevent standing liquids or hot items being placed on the wood surface.
Do not use chemical cleaners or products with ammonia or alcohol in them as they could damage the furniture finish. Additionally, avoid abrasive cleaners, polishes, or cloths that could also damage the furniture’s finish.
Avoid prolonged and direct sunlight on your solid wood furniture. Sunlight can cause the finish to fade or discolour. As well, prolonged direct sunlight may cause the furniture to heat-up and/or dry out, which could cause cracking or warping of the wood.
